method essay Double-click on di colorist any word and craig kielburger, see its definition from resume, Cambridge Dictionaries Online. One of the most important skills you will learn and kielburger essay, develop during your university years is writing, in particular essay writing. It is important to realise that this is di colorist resume, a skill which has to be learnt and practised, and essay, that therefore you should apply yourselves from the di colorist very beginning, as you will be writing essays for admin samples, which you will be graded from the early weeks to di colorist resume, the very end of your degree programme. These skills will be used by you regularly once you leave university, no matter what path you choose to take.
Essay writing involves presenting an argument and communicating. Theme Essays Of The? It can be easily imagined that this covers a vast variety of scenarios in which you need to be clear and persuasive : arguing that you should be given the di colorist resume job you are applying for, selling the outline of a film script you have written, presenting products at various forums, writing articles for publication, persuading your bank manager to extend your loan, preparing reports, beginning and sustaining your career in journalism, and dbq essays, writing lectures and class plans for your future students. The list is di colorist resume, endless, and craig kielburger, it is resume, obvious that the way you present your arguments in written form can make the difference between success and failure - in which case you will have to think again. In some of the scenarios outlined above the dbq essays skills required for essay writing should be slightly adapted but the basic skills and methods are in the main common to all forms of formal writing in which an argument or arguments need to be presented. The focus here is primarily on writing essays concerning literature. You may have many great ideas and di colorist resume, be a very intuitive and fine reader of literature, but no-one will ever know if you cannot express your ideas properly and your communicative skills are not developed. It is no good carrying around insights into on email a particular piece of literature if you do not put efforts into presenting them clearly . Some of the following may be obvious, but the points need to be emphasised and consulted each time you are preparing an essay.
The comments are based on years of experience of reading student essays, good, bad, and indifferent at the University of di colorist, Liège. An essay should not be merely a list. Too many in resume, the past have been a list of notes, or a series of sub-headings followed by a list of dashes (-) or stars (*) accompanied by di colorist one or two words and/or quotations from the literary text with no explanation of what they are doing there. Let us be blunt here and state that we tutors are not impressed by indiscriminate underlining and the use of different coloured pens. Sub-headings written in magenta, underlined in essay, ochre, followed by a list of quotations in vermilion are pointless. We are not tricked by attempts to distract us, through dazzling visual displays, from the fact that an essay is resume, poor.
An essay should be the development of argument, interpretation and analysis through extended and flowing narrative . Dbq Essays? To do this you need to work at the level of the sentence, of di colorist resume, course, but also, very importantly, you need to work at the level of the paragraph . Essay? The paragraph is a coherent passage of logically connected sentences usually concentrating on no more than one or two ideas relevant to di colorist resume, your argument. Do not use very short and unconnected staccato sentences. It takes experience and practice to develop a sense of when a new paragraph is needed and when it has been finished. Examine the introduction to this booklet and this guide to get some sense of how paragraphs, or ' idea units ' as they have also been called, can be developed and constructed, and how their 'natural' beginnings and ends appear. The first sentence of the paragraph should generally be a 'strong' one, used to signal or indicate the essay on email and internet idea to be discussed within the paragraph. Think of a 'topic sentence', as it has also been called, which will highlight the main areas examined in a particular paragraph. Connecting and di colorist, signposting words and phrases should be learnt, used, practised and samples, developed (examples are 'furthermore', 'moreover', 'in addition', 'to qualify the above', 'however', 'in order to', 'in this connection', 'having established that' etc.). The argument should develop through the language you use and therefore in a short essay sub-headings are unnecessary. Several stages are involved in essay preparation, choosing which points are to resume, be considered, deciding how you will deal with them, and spring binder, the actual writing. As you gain more experience you will find methods and ways of di colorist, working which suit you, your personality and lifestyle.
Generally, however, the process will involve the following. You should examine carefully the essay on email statements made in di colorist, the essay question , making sure you understand each word and what is essay, being asked, as misreading and misunderstanding at this stage can be fatal. Di Colorist Resume? Essay questions can be very general, very specific and sometimes deliberately provocative, and an understanding of them is craig kielburger essay, essential. Read through notes you may have made in class, start to gather other relevant source material , and di colorist, make notes about the literary text you are examining. On Email And Internet? Ask yourself the questions suggested earlier in di colorist, the introduction to this booklet, concerning style, content, and imagery etc. Thesis? Next you will probably want to identify the key points that you want to discuss. There may be many points you find generally interesting, but ask yourself if they are relevant to the essay in question.
To do this it can be useful to try to think of a title for your essay. Di Colorist Resume? This is not to be confused with the essay question or title, but is concerned with your response to the task set. What title would best give the bag essay reader an resume overview of your approach and analysis, and highlight the main points you examine and the conclusions you reach? (Suggestions concerning conclusions will be given later). You should not assume that an essay has to include and cover all the possible points an kielburger essay interpretation may offer up. A short, well organised and structured essay focusing on some of the main points is far better than an over-long and unwieldy attempt to say a little about di colorist resume, everything. Admin Resume Samples? You may find it useful to state in the introduction which points you are focusing on and why. Keep your reader informed of the development of your argument. Di Colorist Resume? Let her or him know which direction is being taken and the reasons why. Once the thesis binder main points have been identified you need to consider in which order they will be examined.
Students often do not make the most of the good ideas they have because they get lost if the argument does not develop coherently. Good points are also often thrown away or wasted because students do not say enough about them. Make sure the relevance of each point to the main argument is clearly stated and di colorist resume, demonstrated. You should dwell and a little, linger on the points: often this requires no more than two or three extra sentences, particularly if your writing is concise and focused. A good essay takes time to prepare and write, so start to think about it and do the groundwork well ahead of the essay deadline (even in timed conditions, such as exams, it is important to take the time to organise and structure the resume essay before starting to write).
You will probably find that you need to work out your ideas on paper before writing the essay, and are encouraged to prepare an outline of the essay: a point by point series of key words, phrases and ideas. This will help you to organise the thesis binder structure and to recognise what is relevant and irrelevant to the essay as a whole. Di Colorist? Some people find that a plan or outline will consist of eight to ten words only. Others find it more useful to draw up very detailed plans, outlining every paragraph and its contents. Thesis? Again you will discover which method works for you as you go along. Some students find it easier to think and plan the di colorist resume essay point by point before beginning to write, whilst others find that after some initial preparation, reading, organisation and thinking they can only kielburger, develop their ideas through writing.
Both these approaches take time, if the essays are to be done well. It should be stressed here that the first plan does not have to be binding and may change as the work begins and develops. Resume? The main point here is that essays involve a certain amount of binder, planning and preparation even before the actual writing begins. Having emphasised that essays are hard work and take time it should also be stressed that it can be very stimulating and rewarding to resume, work through a number of ideas in craig kielburger, depth and detail. Di Colorist Resume? Literary texts and literary language are potentially very complex, inspiring, and beautiful. The ideas and images often demand careful thought and attention. Computers are essential in terms of using the time you spend on essay on email an essay efficiently and productively. As stated earlier, good essay writing demands time spent on every stage of the process: reading and di colorist, research, making an outline, ordering and structuring your ideas, writing and changing various drafts, and final editing and presentation.
With this in a little bag essay, mind it cannot be stressed enough how important it is for di colorist, you to learn word-processing skills and to make sure you have access to a computer. Use the university resources. Admittedly the space available is limited at times but this is no excuse not to learn the skills, if you do not already possess them, and to find out where there are available computer terminals. Of course if you use university resources it is even more important to start your essay early in order to avoid the last minute rush as most students, not only from this department, search for terminals in bag essay, a panic on the Friday before a Monday deadline. It is appreciated that students are very busy and do have a lot of work, but it is a mistake to claim, as some students have been heard, that they are too busy to learn word-processing skills.
Ultimately word-processing will save you a lot of time. It is far easier to add and delete material, and to resume, restructure and reorganise essays by moving material around, on a computer than if you are writing by beaded bag essay hand. Software has become really user-friendly; 'Word', for instance, will tell you what to di colorist resume, do in explicit English or French, and typing skills can be learned whilst typing. Your essay will be the representation of an argument on a given subject or subjects . It will include only points which are relevant to the subject, so be careful to beaded bag essay, get rid of material that is not directly relevant. Although students complain that essays are too long, most of the essays you will write are really relatively short.
Part of the skill of writing is to write concisely and resume, economically , without wasting material or 'padding' the work with irrelevant diversions and repetition. Once the essays of the flies points have been chosen they should be presented logically and coherently , so do not leap about from point to resume, point. Essay? Each point generally will have some connection to the preceding one and the one to follow. If you do leave one area of the essay to move into another, but intend later to go back to the point you have left and show, for di colorist, example, how the points may be connected or related, then it can be useful to say so by 'signposting', e.g. 'this point will be picked up later', 'this point will be returned to later, after taking into essays of the consideration . '. After each draft of the essay check that each point is presented in resume, a logical and coherent order. Read each draft carefully and critically. Is there a significant idea you have not included in the essay? Do you need to expand some of the points you have chosen to write about? Are some of the points, after due consideration, not really relevant? Have you been too long-winded or repetitive? If so, cut out and/or reduce some of the text. Does your argument need to be clearer, and do the links between some of the main points need more emphasis?
You should be asking yourself these questions throughout the whole process. A particularly distressing weakness in the past, but hopefully not the future, has been the absence of serious discussion of imagery and literary language . Some students have merely stated that the author uses imagery, illustrated this with an a little beaded example, and di colorist resume, then moved on to the next point on the list. If you discuss images, metaphors and other literary devices, then say how and why they are being used in the piece of fiction, and maybe if you think the imagery works or not. If you do not say how and why an image is being used then don't mention it. You will not write good work on literature if you approach an essay as some useless game of 'spot the kielburger image'. Throughout your years at the University of Liège you will be writing essays on literature which will inevitably include numerous quotations , either from the literature you are working on resume or from ap history dbq essays, secondary sources, be they books or articles on historical context, literary criticism or other relevant areas. Di Colorist? These quotations can obviously add much to the texture and quality of your work, but they are often handled very badly by students. Do not assume that a good quotation will do all the work you want by itself. Poor essays are often merely a patchwork of quotations stitched together by craig kielburger essay the briefest of comments, and it is resume, a mistake to leave quotations hanging in mid-air, as it were, without comment or explanation.
Quotations need to be framed. They should be introduced, not mechanically, but within a context provided by a little bag essay the logical development of your argument . ( See Example 1 at the end of this guide). You should also provide some commentary on the quotations, particularly if they include difficult and/or controversial ideas or material. This is often likely to be the case as there is really little point in including 'bland' quotations in your essay. You may want to gloss, explain, qualify or modify the quoted words, or you may have included quotations whose assumptions or arguments you strongly disagree with. The latter case can be useful, if handled well. Often an argument can be developed through contrast with opposing or differing arguments. This tactic in essay construction also displays independent thinking in that it demonstrates that you have not unthinkingly accepted and believed everything you have read. One final point on quotations: do not plagiarise . Using other people's work without saying so is a serious crime. Tutors have read widely on the subjects you will be writing on resume and are very likely to thesis, recognise when you are plagiarising.
If you use other people's ideas and words they have to be acknowledged through proper footnoting and di colorist, referencing . ( See Example 2 at the end of this guide). Essays need a conclusion , which for the sake of clarity should be relatively short. It is generally best not to include new ideas or new material in your concluding comments, particularly since many people think that a conclusion should be a summary of the prior arguments. Thesis Binder? You may, however, point to alternative conclusions or arguments, or briefly suggest areas of interest that have not been dealt with directly by the essay. People often get the wrong idea about conclusions and believe that this is the place to state firm convictions, and that a conclusion has to make a stand and come down on the side of one argument or another. This can be the case but it is not necessarily so.
If an essay title comes in di colorist resume, the form of a question, for example 'Is James Joyce seeking to distance himself from kielburger essay, traditional forms of di colorist resume, Irish culture?', and you cannot decide, do not think that this is a problem. It is as much a sign of intelligence to state that you cannot decide as it is to sift through the evidence and decide one way or the essays of the other. Think about why you cannot decide. Perhaps the di colorist resume evidence is conflicting. Perhaps the theme essays for lord literary text and its use of imagery is ambiguous, or even contradictory; as is often the case. If you cannot decide, then say so, outlining why you cannot decide. Alternatively, you may partly agree or partly disagree with the statements or questions raised by the title , or by di colorist resume questions raised directly in responding to the title. If so, say so.
A forced conclusion to an essay can be as bad as the essay having no concluding remarks at all. In connection to the last point it should be emphasised that any essay should be about your ideas and your interpretation of the literature being studied . Of course your ideas may, and indeed should, develop through discussions with friends, fellow students, tutors and through the consultation of books and articles, but it is your ideas which should form the basis of the essay. Whilst you will use material that is not your own, it is the way that you use, add to, adapt and modify this material that makes the essay argument your own and di colorist, original. Your own voice should be heard. This needs to be qualified by the understanding that there is essays, a particular form and style in academic writing . This is generally formal, analytical , and 'serious' rather than colloquial, emotional and conversational . Your voice and your ideas need to be heard, but be careful of cultivating an overly idiosyncratic, 'individual' style. Remember that in writing you are communicating and that therefore your argument should be clearly expressed. This does not mean you should be simplistic: it is a very important skill to express complex ideas with clarity.
One final point needs to be made on the subject of the essays you write being about your ideas. Some of you may find this an extraordinary statement but it is a bad idea to tailor and construct your essay around what you believe your tutor or the head of the course thinks about the text, and di colorist resume, what you think she or he wants to hear. A Little Beaded? If you have different methods or your interpretations differ from di colorist resume, those of the tutor, then develop them happily. Remember that essay writing is all about presenting an argument and dbq essays, using evidence from the text and elsewhere to back up your statements, and if you do this well you will be given credit for it whether or not the tutor agrees with the resume overall argument. It is craig, not particularly interesting for tutors to read in essays only di colorist, what they have said in class, particularly if this is reproduced in a flat, unconvincing, and unconvinced manner. Of course you may agree and be persuaded by arguments and interpretations outlined in beaded, class but if you do not believe the arguments you reproduce in the essay it will be obvious and the tutor will wonder why you bothered to include them.
You will write a better essay if you are focusing on your own ideas, developed through discussion and reading, not least because you will be enthused by di colorist resume them. Eventually your ideas will be thought through, outlines planned and for lord, re-planned, main points developed, written down on paper, then rewritten, and di colorist resume, finally given to your tutor. Nevertheless your work on on email and internet the essay has not yet finished. Once the essay has been graded and returned it is very important that you do not merely look at the grade you have received before putting it at di colorist, the bottom of your files. Read through your tutor's comments carefully, and make sure you understand exactly why you have received the grade you have, even if you are happy with it. If you do not understand why, or you are not sure about your tutor's comments, then ask. If it is not possible to craig kielburger, ask during class or you would prefer to resume, talk privately go to your tutor during office hours, or make an appointment if these clash with other classes. Writing is a skill which has to be learnt and practised, it is an ongoing process and and internet, you will learn more each time. Follow up work once the essay has been returned is an di colorist resume important part of this process. Example 1: Using Quotations. The extract below, from a paper on Muriel Spark's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie , shows how quotations can be used.
Because the paper quotes from the novel extensively, page numbers are found within the main body of the text, in parentheses, after complete bibliographical details have been provided in a footnote to the first quotation. Quotations from secondary sources are referenced by resume footnotes. Resume? Short quotations are included, in quotation marks, within the thesis spring binder main body of the paper, whilst the longer quotation, without quotation marks, makes up an indented paragraph. Note that even when the writing by the author of the resume paper is combined with quotations from the novel and secondary sources the sentences are still grammatically correct and coherent. Jean Brodie is convinced of the rightness of her own power, and uses it in admin, a frightening manner: 'Give me a girl at resume, an impressionable age, and she is mine for essay on email, life'. 1 This is Miss Brodie's adoption of the di colorist resume Jesuit formula, but, whereas they claim the child for God, she moulds the child for her own ends. Craig? 'You are mine,' she says, '. of my stamp and cut . ' (129). Di Colorist Resume? When Sandy, her most perceptive pupil, sees the 'Brodie set' 'as a body with Miss Brodie for the head' (36), there is, as David Lodge points out, a biblical parallel with the Church as the essay and internet body of Christ. 2 God is Miss Jean Brodie's rival, and this is demonstrated in a literal way when one of her girls, Eunice, grows religious and is preparing herself for confirmation. Di Colorist Resume? She becomes increasingly independent of Miss Brodie's influence and decides to go on spring the Modern side in the Senior school although Jean Brodie makes clear her own preference for the Classical.
Eunice refuses to continue her role as the group's jester, or to resume, go with them to the ballet. Cunningly, her tutor tries to regain control by playing on her religious convictions: All that term she tried to inspire Eunice to essay and internet, become at least a pioneer missionary in some deadly and dangerous zone of the earth, for it was intolerable to Miss Brodie that any of her girls should grow up not largely dedicated to some vocation. 'You will end up as a Girl Guide leader in a suburb like Corstorphine', she said warningly to resume, Eunice, who was in fact secretly attracted to this idea and thesis binder, who lived in Corstorphine. Di Colorist? (81) Miss Brodie has different plans for Rose; she is to be a 'great lover' (146), and her tutor audaciously absolves her from the sins this will entail: 'she is above the moral code, it does not apply to her' (146). This dismissal of craig kielburger essay, possible retribution distorts the girls' judgement of Miss Brodie's actions.
The above passage is taken from Ruth Whittaker, The Faith and Fiction of Muriel Spark (London and Basingstoke: MacMillan, 1982), pp.106-7. Example 2: Laying out a bibliography. The bibliography will usually include the relevant sources consulted in producing your essay , even if you have not referred to or quoted from di colorist, them directly. The order is alphabetical and determined by the authors' names. Book titles appear in craig kielburger essay, italics or are underlined , whilst article titles appear in inverted commas. When referring to books you should include the author's name, place of publication, the publisher, and the date when the resume book was published. To reference the source of an article from ap history dbq essays, a journal include the name of the journal, the number and/or volume number, the date of publication and the page numbers. There are several styles for laying out a bibliography, but the di colorist same elements appear in each, and you must be consistent. Consult the handbooks to be found in the libraries for further details. This is beaded, a model used by many British universities and di colorist resume, publishers. the subjective necessity for social settlements. contents: preface · the subjective necessity for di colorist, social settlements · how to cite this piece. Jane Addams (1869-1935) is, perhaps, best known as a pioneering social worker and kielburger social activist, however she was also a committed internationalist and critical intellectual. She introduced and developed the idea of the settlement house to the United States (founding Hull House with Ellen Starr in 1889); campaigned for better social conditions and led investigations into resume various areas of health and welfare. Theme Essays For Lord Flies. Jane Addams saw education as the di colorist resume, foundation for democracy. She also argued for women's suffrage and for the peaceful resolution of international conflicts.
Her pacifism led her to oppose US entry into the First World War. After the cessation of dbq essays hostilities she was active in organizing relief supplies. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931, Jane Addams died in 1935. As becomes clear from the opening paragraph, this paper was the first of two talks Jane Addams gave at the School of Applied Ethics in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1892. Like Samuel Barnett she believed that settlements were based on the idea of reciprocal need. On the one side there was the need of poor people for help with their 'objective problems', and on the other, the need of the more privileged to express their ideals in practical ways.
This paper was, as Jane Addams states in resume her introduction, 'an attempt to analyze the motives which underlie a movement based, not only upon conviction, but upon beaded genuine emotion, wherever educated young people are seeking an outlet for that sentiment for universal brotherhood'. Originally published as 'A new impulse to di colorist resume an old gospel' Forum 14 (1892) pp342-356 and thesis spring later in Henry C. Adams (ed.) The full text of di colorist resume Twenty Years at Hull House is available on the Celebration of Women Writers site. The Ethical Culture Societies held a summer school at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in thesis spring 1892, to which they invited several people representing the then new Settlement movement, that they might discuss with others the general theme of Philanthropy and Social Progress. I venture to produce here parts of a lecture I delivered in Plymouth, both because I have found it impossible to formulate with the same freshness those early motives and di colorist strivings, and because, when published with other papers given that summer, it was received by the Settlement people themselves as a satisfactory statement. I remember on golden summer afternoon during the sessions of the dbq essays, summer school that several of us met on the shores of a pond in a pine wood a few miles from Plymouth, to discuss our new movement. The natural leader of the group was Robert A. Woods.
He had recently returned from di colorist a residence in Toynbee Hall, London, to open Andover House in Boston, and had just issued a book, English Social Movements, in which he had gathered together and focused the many [page 114] forms of social endeavor preceding and contemporaneous with the English Settlements. There were Miss Vida D. Scudder and Miss Helena Dudley from the College Settlement Association, Miss Julia C. Lathrop and myself from Hull-House. For Lord Of The. Some of di colorist us had numbered our years as far as thirty, and we all carefully avoided the extravagance of statement which characterizes youth, and yet I doubt if anywhere on the continent that summer could have been found a group of people more genuinely interested in admin resume social development or more sincerely convinced that they had found a clue by which the conditions in di colorist resume crowded cities might be understood and the agencies for social betterment developed. We were all careful to avoid saying that we had found a life work, perhaps with an instinctive dread of expending all our energy in vows of dbq essays constancy, as so often happens; and yet it is interesting to note that of di colorist all the people whom I have [page 115] recalled as the enthusiasts at samples that little conference have remained attached to Settlements in actual residence for di colorist, longer or shorter periods each year during the eighteen years that have elapsed since then, although they have also been closely identified as publicists or governmental officials with movements outside. It is as if they had discovered that the Settlement was too valuable as a method as a way of approach to the social question to for lord abandoned, although they had long since discovered it was not a social movement in itself. This, however, is anticipating the di colorist, future, whereas the following paper on The Subjective Necessity for Social Settlements should have a chance to speak for itself. It is perhaps too late in the day to spring binder express regret for its stilted title. This paper is an attempt to analyze the motives which underlie a movement based, not only upon di colorist conviction, but upon thesis spring binder genuine emotion, wherever educated young people are seeking an outlet for that sentiment for universal brotherhood, which the best spirit of di colorist resume our times is forcing from an emotion into a motive.
These young people accomplish little toward the solution of this social problem, and bear the brunt of being cultivated into unnourished, oversensitive lives. They have been shut off from the common labor by which they live which is a great source of moral and physical health. They feel a fatal want of harmony between their theory and kielburger their lives, a lack of coordination between thought and action. I think it is hard for us to realize how seriously many of resume [page 116] them are taking to the notion of human brotherhood, how eagerly they long to give tangible expression to the democratic ideal. These young men and ap history women, longing to socialize their democracy, are animated by certain hopes which may be thus loosely formulated; that if in a democratic country nothing can be permanently achieved save through the masses of the people, it will be impossible to establish a higher political life than the people themselves crave; that it is di colorist resume, difficult to see how the notion of a higher civic life can be fostered save through common intercourse; that the blessings which we associate with a life of dbq essays refinement and cultivation can be made universal and must be made universal if they are to be permanent; that the good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain, is floating in mid-air, until it is resume, secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life. Essay On Email And Internet. It is easier to resume state these hopes than to formulate the line of motives, which I believe to constitute the trend of the theme essays of the, subjective pressure toward the Settlement. There is something primordial about these motives, but I am perhaps overbold in designating them as a great desire to share the race life. Resume. We all bear traces of the starvation struggle which for so long made up the life of the theme of the, race.
Our very organism holds memories and glimpses of that long life of our ancestors, which still goes on among so many of our contemporaries. Nothing so deadens the sympathies and shrivels the power of di colorist resume enjoyment as the persistent keeping away from the craig, great opportunities for helpfulness and a continual ignoring of the starvation struggle which makes up the di colorist, life of at least half the race. To shut one's self away from that [page 117] half of the race life is to shut one's self away from the most vital part of it; it is to live out thesis spring binder, but half the humanity to di colorist which we have been born heir and to use but half our faculties. Samples. We have all had longings for a fuller life which should include the use of di colorist resume these faculties. These longings are the physical complement of the theme essays of the flies, Intimations of Immortality, on which no ode has yet been written. Di Colorist Resume. To portray these would be the ap history, work of a poet, and it is hazardous for any but a poet to attempt it.
You may remember the di colorist resume, forlorn feeling which occasionally seizes you when you arrive early in the morning a stranger in a great city: the stream of laboring people goes past you as you gaze through the plate-glass window of your hotel; you see hard working men lifting great burdens; you hear the driving and jostling of huge carts and your heart sinks with a sudden sense of futility. The door opens behind you and you turn to the man who brings you in beaded bag essay your breakfast with a quick sense of human fellowship. Di Colorist Resume. You find yourself praying that you may never lose your hold on it all. A more poetic prayer would be that the great mother breasts of our common humanity, with its labor and suffering and its homely comforts, may never be withheld from you. You turn helplessly to the waiter and feel that it would be almost grotesque to claim from him the sympathy you crave because civilization has placed you apart, but you resent your position with a sudden sense of a little beaded bag essay snobbery. Literature is full of portrayals of these glimpses: they come to shipwrecked men on rafts; they overcome the differences of an incongruous multitude when in di colorist resume the presence of a great danger or [page 118] when moved by a common enthusiasm. They are not, however, confined to such moments, and if we were in the habit of telling them to each other, the recital would be as long as the tales of children are, when they sit down on the green grass and confide to each other how many times they have remembered that they lived once before.
If these childish tales are the stirring of inherited impressions, just so surely is the other the striving of spring binder inherited powers. It is true that there is nothing after disease, indigence and a sense of di colorist guilt, so fatal to health and to life itself as the want of a proper outlet for active faculties. I have seen young girls suffer and grow sensibly lowered in vitality in dbq essays the first years after they leave school. In our attempt then to give a girl pleasure and freedom from care we succeed, for the most part, in di colorist resume making her pitifully miserable. She finds life so different from what she expected it to be. She is besotted with innocent little ambitions, and does not understand this apparent waste of herself, this elaborate preparation, if no work is provided for her. Ap History. There is a heritage of noble obligation which young people accept and long to perpetuate. The desire for action, the wish to right wrong and alleviate suffering haunts them daily.
Society smiles at it indulgently instead of making it of value to itself. The wrong to di colorist resume them begins even farther back, when we restrain the first childish desires for doing good, and tell them that they must wait until they are older and better fitted. We intimate that social obligation begins at theme flies a fixed date, forgetting that it begins at birth itself. We treat them as children who, with strong-growing limbs, are allowed to use their legs [page 119] but not their arms, or whose legs are daily carefully exercised that after a while their arms may be put to high use. We do this in spite of the protest of the best educators, Locke and Pestalozzi. We are fortunate in resume the meantime if their unused members do not weaken and disappear. They do sometimes.
There are a few girls who, by the time they are educated, forget their old childish desires to help the thesis, world and to resume play with poor little girls who haven't playthings. Parents are often inconsistent: they deliberately expose their daughters to knowledge of the distress in the world; they send them to hear missionary addresses on resume samples, famines in India and China; they accompany them to lectures on the suffering in Siberia; they agitate together over the forgotten region of East London. In addition to resume this, from babyhood the altruistic tendencies of these daughters are persistently cultivated. They are taught to be self-forgetting and self-sacrificing, to consider the good of the a little, whole before the good of the ego. But when all this information and culture show results, when the daughter comes back from college and begins to recognize her social claim to di colorist the submerged tenth, and to evince a disposition to resume samples fulfill it, the family claim is resume, strenuously asserted; she is told that she is unjustified, ill-advised in her efforts. A Little Beaded. If she persists, the family too often are injured and unhappy unless the efforts are called missionary and the religious zeal of the family carry them over their sense of abuse. When this zeal does not exist, the result is perplexing. It is a curious violation of what we would fain believe a fundamental law–that the final return of the deed is upon the head of the resume, doer. The deed is that of exclusiveness [page 120] and caution, but the return, instead of falling upon the head of the exclusive and cautious, falls upon a young head full of generous and on email unselfish plans.
The girl loses something vital out of her life to which she is entitled. She is restricted and unhappy; her elders meanwhile, are unconscious of the situation and we have all the elements of a tragedy. We have in resume America a fast-growing number of cultivated young people who have no recognized outlet for their active faculties. They hear constantly of the a little beaded bag essay, great social maladjustment, but no way is provided for them to change it, and their uselessness hangs about them heavily. Huxley declares that the sense of uselessness is the severest shock which the human system can sustain, and di colorist that if persistently sustained, it results in atrophy of function. These young people have had advantages of college, of ap history dbq essays European travel, and of economic study, but they are sustaining this shock of inaction. Di Colorist Resume. They have pet phrases, and they tell you that the things that make us all alike are stronger than the things that make us different. They say that all men are united by needs and sympathies far more permanent and radical than anything that temporarily divides them and sets them in opposition to each other. If they affect art, they say that the decay in artistic expression is due to the decay in ethics, that art when shut away from the human interests and from the great mass of humanity is self-destructive. They tell their elders with all the bitterness of youth that if they expect success from them in business or politics or in whatever lines their ambition for them has run, they must let them consult all of humanity; that they must let them [page 121] find out what the people want and how they want it. It is only the stronger young people, however, who formulate this.
Many of them dissipate their energies in so-called enjoyment. Others not content with that, go on studying and go back to college for their second degrees; not that they are especially fond of study, but because they want something definite to do, and their powers have been trained in the direction of mental accumulation. Many are buried beneath this mental accumulation with lowered vitality and discontent. Walter Besant says they have had the vision that Peter had when he saw the craig kielburger, great sheet let down from di colorist heaven, wherein was neither clean nor unclean. He calls it the sense of humanity. It is not philanthropy nor benevolence, but a thing fuller and bag essay wider than either of these. This young life, so sincere in its emotion and good phrases and di colorist resume yet so undirected, seems to ap history dbq essays me as pitiful as the di colorist resume, other great mass of destitute lives. One is supplementary to the other, and some method of communication can surely be devised. Mr. Barnett, who urged the first Settlement,–Toynbee Hall, in East London,–recognized this need of outlet for the young men of Oxford and Cambridge, and hoped that the Settlement would supply the communication. Resume. It is easy to see why the Settlement movement originated in England, where the years of education are more constrained and definite than they are here, where class distinctions are more rigid.
The necessity of it was greater there, but we are fast feeling the pressure of the need and meeting the necessity for Settlements in America. Our young people feel nervously the resume, need of [page 122] putting theory into action, and respond quickly to the Settlement form of activity. Other motives which I believe make toward the essay and internet, Settlement are the result of a certain renaissance going forward in Christianity. The impulse to share the di colorist, lives of the poor, the desire to make social service, irrespective of propaganda, express the spirit of dbq essays Christ, is as old as Christianity itself. We have no proof from the records themselves that the early Roman Christians, who strained their simple art to the point of grotesqueness in their eagerness to record a good news on the walls of the catacombs, considered this good news a religion.
Jesus had no set of truths labeled Religious. On the contrary, his doctrine was that all truth is one, that the appropriation of it is freedom. His teaching had no dogma to mark it off from truth and action in general. He himself called it a revelation–a life. These early Roman Christians received the Gospel message, a command to love all men, with a certain joyous simplicity.
The image of the Good Shepherd is blithe and gay beyond the gentlest shepherd of Greek mythology; the hart no longer pants, but rushes to the water brooks. The Christians looked for the continuous revelation, but believed what Jesus said, that this revelation, to be retained and made manifest, must be put into terms of action; that action is the di colorist resume, only medium man has for receiving and appropriating truth; that the doctrine must be known through the will. That Christianity has to be revealed and embodied in the line of social progress is ap history dbq essays, a corollary to the simple proposition, that man's action is found in his social [page 123] relationships in the way in which he connects with his fellows; that his motives for action are the zeal and affection with which he regards his fellows. By this simple process was created a deep enthusiasm for humanity; which regarded man as at once the organ and the object of revelation; and by this process came about the di colorist resume, wonderful fellowship, the true democracy of the early Church, that so captivates the imagination. The early Christians were preeminently nonresistant. They believed in love as a cosmic force. There was no iconoclasm during the minor peace of the ap history dbq essays, Church. They did not yet denounce nor tear down temples, nor preach the end of the world. They grew to a mighty number, but it never occurred to resume them, either in their weakness or in their strength, to regard other men for an instant as their foes or as aliens. The spectacle of the Christians loving all men was the most astounding Rome had ever seen.
They were eager to sacrifice themselves for the weak, for and internet, children, and for the aged; they identified themselves with slaves and did not avoid the plague; they longed to share the common lot that they might receive the resume, constant revelation. It was a new treasure which the early Christians added to the sum of a little beaded all treasures, a joy hitherto unknown in the world–the joy of finding the Christ which lieth in each man, but which no man can unfold save in fellowship. A happiness ranging from the heroic to the pastoral enveloped them. They were to possess a revelation as long as life had new meaning to unfold, new action to propose. I believe that there is a distinct turning among many young men and women toward this simple acceptance of di colorist resume Christ's message. They resent the [page 124] assumption that Christianity is a set of ideas which belong to the religious consciousness, whatever that may be.
They insist that it cannot be proclaimed and instituted apart from the social life of the community and that it must seek a simple and natural expression in the social organism itself. The Settlement movement is only one manifestation of that wider humanitarian movement which throughout Christendom, but pre-eminently in England, is bag essay, endeavoring to embody itself, not in di colorist resume a sect, but in society itself. I believe that this turning, this renaissance of the early Christian humanitarianism, is going on in America, in Chicago, if you please, without leaders who write or philosophize, without much speaking, but with a bent to express in social service and in terms of theme essays for lord of the action the spirit of Christ. Di Colorist Resume. Certain it is that spiritual force is found in the Settlement movement, and it is also true that this force must be evoked and admin resume samples must be called into play before the success of di colorist any Settlement is assured. Craig Kielburger. There must be the overmastering belief that all that is noblest in di colorist life is common to men as men, in order to accentuate the likenesses and ignore the differences which are found among the people whom the Settlement constantly brings into thesis juxtaposition. It may be true, as the Positivists insist, that the very religious fervor of man can be turned into love for his race, and his desire for a future life into content to live in the echo of di colorist his deeds; Paul's formula of beaded bag essay seeking for the Christ which lieth in each man and founding our likenesses on him, seems a simpler formula to many of us. In a thousand voices singing the di colorist resume, Hallelujah Chorus in Handel's Messiah, it is possible to distinguish [page 125] the leading voices, but the differences of training and cultivation between them and theme essays flies the voices in the chorus, are lost in the unity of purpose and in the fact that they are all human voices lifted by a high motive. This is a weak illustration of what a Settlement attempts to do.
It aims, in a measure, to develop whatever of social life its neighborhood may afford, to focus and give form to that life, to resume bring to on email and internet bear upon it the results of cultivation and training; but it receives in exchange for resume, the music of isolated voices the volume and strength of the resume, chorus. It is quite impossible for me to say in what proportion or degree the subjective necessity which led to resume the opening of essay Hull-House combined the three trends: first, the di colorist resume, desire to interpret democracy in social terms; secondly, the impulse beating at the very source of our lives, urging us to aid in the race progress; and, thirdly, the Christian movement toward humanitarianism. It is difficult to analyze a living thing; the analysis is at best imperfect. Many more motives may blend with the three trends; possibly the desire for a new form of social success due to theme essays flies the nicety of imagination, which refuses worldly pleasures unmixed with the joys of self-sacrifice; possibly a love of approbation, so vast that it is not content with the treble clapping of delicate hands, but wishes also to hear the bass notes from toughened palms, may mingle with these. The Settlement then, is an experimental effort to aid in di colorist resume the solution of the social and essay industrial problems which are engendered by the modern conditions of life in a great city.
It insists that these problems are not confined to resume any one portion of a city. Beaded Bag Essay. It is an attempt to di colorist relieve, at the same time, the overaccumulation at [page 126] one end of society and the destitution at the other; but it assumes that this overaccumulation and destitution is most sorely felt in thesis binder the things that pertain to social and educational privileges. From its very nature it can stand for di colorist resume, no political or social propaganda. It must, in a sense, give the warm welcome of an essay and internet inn to all such propaganda, if perchance one of di colorist them be found an angel. The only thesis spring thing to be dreaded in the Settlement is that it lose its flexibility, its power of quick adaptation, its readiness to change its methods as its environment may demand. It must be open to conviction and must have a deep and abiding sense of tolerance. It must be hospitable and ready for experiment. It should demand from its residents a scientific patience in di colorist the accumulation of facts and the steady holding of their sympathies as one of the best instruments for that accumulation. It must be grounded in ap history a philosophy whose foundation is on the solidarity of the human race, a philosophy which will not waver when the race happens to be represented by a drunken woman or an idiot boy. Its residents must be emptied of all conceit of opinion and all self-assertion, and ready to arouse and interpret the public opinion of their neighborhood. They must be content to live quietly side by di colorist side with their neighbors, until they grow into a sense of relationship and mutual interests.
Their neighbors are held apart by a little beaded differences of race and di colorist resume language which the residents can more easily overcome. They are bound to see the theme essays flies, needs of their neighborhood as a whole, to furnish data for legislation, and to use their influence to secure it. In short, residents are pledged to devote themselves to the duties of good citizenship and to the arousing of the social energies [page 127] which too largely lie dormant in every neighborhood given over to industrialism. They are bound to di colorist resume regard the entire life of their city as organic, to make an effort to on email unify it, and to di colorist protest against its over-differentiation. It is always easy to make all philosophy point one particular moral and theme essays all history adorn one particular tale; but I may be forgiven the reminder that the best speculative philosophy sets forth the solidarity of the human race; that the highest moralists have taught that without the advance and improvement of the whole, no man can hope for any lasting improvement in his own moral or material individual condition; and resume that the subjective necessity for Social Settlements is on email, therefore identical with that necessity, which urges us on toward social and individual salvation. A Critical Understanding of Edward Curtis’s Photos of Native American Culture. A massive installation at the Muskegon Museum of di colorist Art displays Edward Curtis#8217;s entire ethnographic survey of surviving Native American culture at the turn of the and internet 20th century. MUSKEGON, Mich. — Can one come to a revelation through a visit to resume, an art museum, or is it something that can only be arrived at through a more intensive personal journey? This is the thesis binder question that emerged for me as I visited the di colorist resume Muskegon Museum of Art for Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian , a massive installation of the 30-year-plus ethnographic survey of surviving Native American culture by theme essays, turn-of-the-20th-century, Seattle-based photographer Edward S. Curtis. Edward Curtis, self-portrait. The North American Indian is a seminal and controversial blend of documentary and staged photography — one which contributes to much of the foundational imagery and, often-stereotypical, understanding possessed by white America about di colorist resume, some 82-plus native tribes that the United States eradicated over a century of colonization. Much has been made about the complexities, contradictions, and of the flies, conflicts of interest in Curtis’s masterwork, by Native and non-Native scholars. Some argue that in staging photographs and, at times, adding props or accessories, Curtis took liberties with the concept of ethnography, both imposing and reinforcing white notions of resume Native American appearances and culture.
Others argue that without Curtis, there would be hardly any extant imagery of the cultural heritage of the tribes he worked with. The Curtis exhibition at ap history, the Muskegon Museum of Art raised, for me, compelling questions around our individual and institutional tendencies to justify the art that we find interesting. It is di colorist, undeniable that the essay on email and internet 723 portfolio images lining the walls of the Musekegon’s galleries — as well as a 20-volume edition gathering 1,500 additional photos and ethnographic research carried out by Curtis in cooperation with tribes west of the Missouri River — represent a remarkable accomplishment. They are fascinating photos, and managed to chronicle what Curtis called, “the lifeways and mores of di colorist resume all the essay tribes who were still relatively intact from the di colorist resume colonialism and the invasion of Anglo culture.” Beyond ethnography, many of them are also formally beautiful works of art. Plate from Edward Curtis#8217;s The North American Indian. The Muskegon Museum has personal reason to take pride in resume, this exhibition — the museum is in possession of the di colorist resume collection because of Lulu Miller, the first female director of the adjacent Hackley Library and second director of the Muskegon Art Museum (appointed in samples, 1916, being the second woman in the US to run an art museum). In 1908, as her first acquisition for the library, Miller sourced $3,000 to purchase a subscription to Curtis’s series, which was issued in 20 volumes and di colorist, would ultimately take 30 years to complete — an incredible gamble when you consider that sum is dbq essays, equivalent to $80,000 today, and resume, certainly a tidy sum for a regional library. The Muskegon Museum of Art owns one of the estimated 225 sets of The North American Indian (many of which are likely incomplete), and this exhibition is one of very few that has put the collection on display in its entirety. The final volume arrived in late 1930, bracketing Miller’s career with the library and museum, and in the 1970s was transferred from the library to the purview of the art museum for conservation efforts.
Hackley Public Library in Muskegon, Michigan. “We think she was pretty gutsy,” said Muskegon Museum of Art’s executive director Judith Haynor, in reference to Miller. “We have a variety of letters from Curtis to Lulu, and from his staff — they had a lively correspondence. There have been 200 or more exhibitions of essay and internet selections of di colorist Curtis’s work, but from what we can ascertain, never before has the entire body of work been put out on a little beaded bag essay display.” However, the hometown pride in the visionary Lulu Miller — not to di colorist, mention the more generalized sense of wonder at the beauty and exoticism of Curtis’s imagery — has perhaps skewed the museum#8217;s framing of the appropriateness and relevance of Curtis#8217;s work. Craig Kielburger! The prevailing view here is that the photographs#8217; issues are a product of their time, and that they are nonetheless of educational value, particularly in our current climate. Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian , installation view at di colorist resume, the Muskegon Museum of Art. Essay! “I think that these images clearly show someone who began to understand more deeply the importance and di colorist resume, uniqueness of the American Indian cultures,” said guest curator Ben Mitchell, who worked on the exhibition for some two years. “You can find this in his writing, that he came to understand that white America had something really poignant and resume samples, important to di colorist resume, learn from Native American culture, especially the depth of the spirituality. And I think about the times that we live in right now, in a time of name-calling, when our major political leadership is essays, scapegoating people who are not white. Deportation is up 38% in just the last four months. The point is, I think, that Curtis, through The North American Indian , realized that white America had something to learn.” Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian , installation view, including a display featuring a camera of the type Curtis hauled, along with boxes of glass negatives. The museum has gone to great lengths to ensure deft handling of the subject matter, including engagement with the di colorist local Little River Band of Ottowa Indians, located in Manistee, Michigan (too far east to have been included in Curtis’s work). Tribal Chief Larry Romanelli served as an advisor to the exhibition, and appeared with other Native American participants in panel discussions and programming that accompanied the dbq essays exhibition. His view of the exhibition is positive, and echoes a sentiment presented in some of the di colorist resume voluminous wall texts accompanying the imagery: that Curtis captured humanity and and internet, heritage that is significant to the descendants of Native American tribes, which would likely have otherwise been lost forever. “Edward Curtis’s work is di colorist, not embraced by 100% of people, or all Indian tribes, as well.
And they wanted to know if I thought it would be a good idea or not,” said Romanelli in an interview with Hyperallergic. “I’ve been interested in his work for thesis, years, and I believe the good absolutely outweighs the negative part. I don’t believe that he ever did anything to intentionally hurt Native Americans. I think he was trying to help Native Americans, and that makes a big difference to me.” Plate from Edward Curtis#8217;s The North American Indian ( detail view) Romanelli also highlighted a strong sense of connection to the subjects of Curtis’s photographs. “The world would not have known those people [without Curtis’s work], and I believe, in di colorist, one sense, I can see the souls of my ancestors. I would not have known what they looked like, who they were. So I cherish those photos, from my perspective.” Perhaps it is essay and internet, powerful enough, all on its own, to resume, enter a conventional museum space and find it entirely dedicated to images of people of spring color. Western art institutions continue to be overwhelmingly dominated by Eurocentric imagery and artists, and perhaps, by putting these photos on display, they help contribute to a collective understanding of racial injustice. Plate from Edward Curtis#8217;s The North American Indian. “The time we live in resume, today, where we have the rise of white supremacy, compared with just one year ago — I think pushing forward a takeaway that the majority, dominant, white male culture in America still has a lot to learn from cultures that are not themselves is binder, entirely appropriate,” said Mitchell, in an interview with Hyperallergic. “Some of us may feel that we have already had that takeaway, because of di colorist our background and our experience — but remember that in almost any community, the art museum, the anthropology museum will receive far more visitors with very little background in art and anthropology. Our job is to kielburger essay, teach.” Perhaps this is so, and all my personal frustration at the retrograde mentalities that make such remedial learning a necessity does not, at the end of the day, mean they do not exist or need to be addressed. But I have to wonder, if we are dealing with a population whose baseline takeaway from The North American Indian is that “Indians are people, too,” is di colorist, putting 723 images on display enough to truly move the needle? After all, the United States is still breaking treaties.
One cannot doubt Mitchell’s sincere engagement with Curtis’s work, nor the museum’s good faith efforts to present it in an inclusive way — nor even, in following Curtis’s 30-year journey of engagement with tribespeople, can one doubt that the experience profoundly affected his understanding of Native American cultures and humanity. But if presenting such imagery were enough to trigger revelation, could we not put 723 images of Syrian refugees on display somewhere, and thesis, watch the understanding come rolling in? Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian , installation view at di colorist, the Muskegon Museum of Art. A more effective contemporary reading of Curtis#8217;s work happens in what I consider to binder, be the very best part of the exhibition: the room juxtaposing Curtis#8217;s images with the di colorist resume work of contemporary Native American artists who#8217;ve reflected upon his impact on their cultural identity. Some, like two paintings by Ojibwe painter Jim Denomie, characterize Curtis as a kind of voyeur or paparazzi figure. Others directly reference his photography in dbq essays, their personal, interpretive works. Inarguably, Curtis#8217;s long relationship with the tribespeople of di colorist North America had a significant impact on craig their communities. Some of the contemporary works, hung adjacent to di colorist, Edward Curtis#8217;s photographs which served as source material.
According to the narrative presented by the museum, by the end of flies The North American Indian , Curtis was basically penniless and died in obscurity, as popular interest in his project waned while his own obsession mounted. In his later years, as he became more aware of the struggles of the people he was photographing, his work might be seen as an di colorist, early attempt at essay on email, activist or social practice art, before there was any notion of such a thing. These works, also on display, showcase Native Americans living in a more Anglicized context, wearing Depression-era clothing rather than traditional garb, and di colorist, reflect the ways in which there was, by then, little remaining of the #8220;lifeways and a little beaded, mores#8221; that Curtis found so initially fascinating. The fact that he continued to di colorist resume, pursue Native Americans as subjects outside of the exoticized trappings of a little their traditional culture demonstrates a real transition in Curtis#8217;s work. Di Colorist! Painting by Ojibwe artist Jim Denomie characterizes Edward Curtis as a paparazzi figure. Today, the preponderance of technology has made it possible for resume, people to di colorist, self-document, and there is less a need to rely on samples an external, paternalistic, or authoritative record. In this, at di colorist resume, least, Curtis#8217;s access to photography tools and training can justifiably be recognized as a product of his time. The question is, then, how can we take this work and do it better in our time — for essays, example, centralizing the di colorist creative output and self-representation of Native American peoples, or at least giving it equal ground in the museum setting (rather than only putting it on display in museums dedicated to thesis, anthropology or Native American art). #8220;I’ve come away from this two years of work realizing that history is a very powerful force, because history, when you’re immersed in it, isn’t just looking at the past,#8221; said Mitchell. #8220;History constantly informs the present you’re living in — or it better, if we’re paying attention. But even more than that — and resume, this touches upon why this exhibition is so poignantly timely for the time we live in — history also points us to our future that we’re going to share.
We learn from the history how to live in ap history dbq essays, our present, and how to plan to live in our future.” Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian continues at the Muskegon Museum of Art (296 W Webster Ave, Muskegon, Mich.) through September 10. Too Lewd for the Louvre, Boinking Building Sculpture Nixed in Paris. #8220;Domestikator,#8221; a 40-foot-tall inhabitable sculpture that was to be part of the FIAC fair#8217;s public art program, is shaped like two figures making whoopee.
